Painter and printmaker
Sara Bevan is a contemporary landscape painter and printmaker living and working in Sennen, Cornwall. A graduate of Liverpool Polytechnic with a BA (Hons) in Printed Textiles, she is a member of the Cornwall Crafts Association and an Associate Member of the Penwith Society of Artists.
Working across mixed media, oils and printmaking, Sara draws inspiration from the landscapes of West Cornwall. Through colour, texture and expressive mark-making, she explores the relationship between landscape, memory and experience, creating atmospheric work that captures the character and spirit of the far west.
Sara Bevan Sketchbook I
As a painter and printmaker living in the far west of Cornwall, my practice is rooted in the rugged beauty of this ancient, weather-shaped landscape. This sketchbook began as part of a Penwith Landscape Partnership commission — a collaborative project with fellow artist Amanda Richardson. Our brief was simple, yet rich with possibility: to record a Cornish hedge through the four seasons, each through our own creative practice.
This sketchbook represents only one part of a larger body of work.
For me what unfolded became more than documentation. The hedge—stoic, wild, and endlessly alive—became a lens through which I explored texture, movement, and the shifting dialogue between nature and time. This sketchbook brings together not only my studies from the hedge we chose in Penwith, but also sketches inspired by Dartmoor and imagined landscapes—places where memory, observation, and intuition converge.
These pages are visual reflections rather than literal recordings. Through abstraction, gesture, and layered mark-making, I explore how landscape can be felt as much as seen.
