Painter and ceramicist
After studying Ceramics at art school, Jennie Hale worked as Marianne de Trey’s workshop assistant at Shinners Bridge Pottery before establishing her own pottery in West Devon.
It was here that she began writing and illustrating nature diaries, initially to inform her ceramic work and eventually becoming work in their own right. In 2007, A&C Black published The Nature Diary of an Artist, a collection of illustrated diaries begun in 1994.
Her pottery is now situated beside Colliford Lake on Bodmin Moor. Surrounded by the flora and fauna of the landscape, Jennie makes daily drawings and notes from nature, creating a collection of sketchbooks and diaries that continue to inform her ceramics.
Inspired by the resilience of nature in both wild and urban landscapes, her work explores the way nature arrives, adapts and survives.
